NASHVILLE -- Nashville Electric Service is working to restore power for about 30,000 customers in the city, including parts of Nashville International Airport, where the outage has affected departures.

The Tennessean said workers believe the airport was struck by lightning Tuesday. Airport spokeswoman Shannon Sumrall said the outage has affected jet bridges attached to departing planes, leaving them nonoperational.

Utility spokeswoman Holden Miller said outages jumped by about 20,000 in 45 minutes. Miller said it's not known when service will be fully restored.

Miller said the storms seemed to have ended by early evening and no additional outages were expected.
