The Humane Educational Society in Hamilton County is calling for a letter-writing campaign and a rally Wednesday to pressure county commissioners for more money for the organization.

Development manager Taylor Hixson said in a news release that the animal-care group has been underfunded for years but that some commissioners have questioned Mayor Jim Coppinger's proposed funding increase in the 2016 budget.

"If you support HES and the needs of homeless animals in Hamilton County, please take just a moment to send a letter to your commissioner and let them know," Hixson wrote in the news release.

The release also asked supporters to meet from 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday, before the County Commission meeting starts at 9:30, to "show the commissioners that Hamilton County wants homeless animals to have the second chance that they are so deserving of in a safe and comfortable environment."
