Fire investigators are trying to determine who may have set a fire at Chattanooga National Cemetery that burned small flags and flowers.

A groundskeeper discovered the charred remains at the columbarium this morning and contacted police, according to a news release from the Chattanooga Fire Department.

The fire department called it an act of vandalism.

Lt. Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division said the fire occurred sometime between last Friday night and this morning. In the release, he said the fire caused minimal damage, but desecration of a grave is a serious offense. If the perpetrator is caught, they could face local and federal charges.
