Ryan Epperson, the Hamilton County corrections deputy charged with dressing as a surgeon in an elaborate attempt to steal drugs from Chattanooga's major hospitals, resigned Tuesday morning.

Epperson waived a preliminary hearing in General Sessions Court and agreed that his charges would be sent directly to a Grand Jury. Epperson will remain free on a $93,000 bond.

Epperson's attorney, Bill Speek, said Epperson resigned immediately after that hearing and is seeking substance abuse counseling.

Epperson was charged with multiple drug, vandalism and impersonation charges in late May after police found him wandering Erlanger's Hospital in scrubs, with vials of prescription medications in his pocket and more in bags in his car.
