Police and firefighters shut down Amnicola Highway today after a pickup truck and a semi-truck collided around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Amnicola and Creekside Road.

The driver of the pickup truck was trapped in his vehicle, which was wedged under the semi-truck when firefighters arrived, said spokesman Bruce Garner.

A fire broke out in the engine compartment while firefighters cut the man out of the truck, but was quickly extinguished, Garner said. The driver was freed after 30 minutes and taken to Erlanger Hospital.

The man's condition is unknown.

Amnicola Highway was completely closed while firefighters worked but should reopen around noon, Garner said.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation.

It is the second serious wreck involving a semi-truck in Chattanooga in the last six days. On Thursday, a tractor-trailer plowed into several vehicles on I-75 and killed six people.

That crash is also under investigation.
