The City of Chattanooga is trying again for a federal grant to update and rebuild Wilcox Tunnel.

The tunnel is in bad need of a full renovation, and the city aims to build a second tunnel to better support traffic.

City Council members will vote next week to allow the city to apply for, and possibly accept, a $53 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant.

Transportation Director Blythe Bailey said the city would have to match $25 million of the grant, and that amount would be bonded over time.

This would not be the first time the city has sought a TIGER grant to fix the tunnel.
