Ben Carson to visit Alabama

For most presidential candidates, a compelling personal history is an essential item in the campaign tool kit. But, just as tales at the dinner table sometimes get embellished, so do stories on the campaign trail. Carson last week clarified previous claims that he’d been offered a scholarship to West Point, saying that while he’d been told he could get an appointment to the school, he never applied. Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is scheduled to visit Alabama for a rally and a fundraiser.

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill said in a release Friday that Carson is scheduled to speak at a free rally at the University of South Alabama in Mobile from 4-5 p.m. on Nov. 19. Merrill said the event will be followed by a fundraiser.

Merrill said nine presidential candidates have visited Alabama ahead of the March 1 southeastern regional primary. Southern states have banded together in the so-called "SEC Primary" to try drawing more interest from presidential contenders.

Merrill said Carson also visited Pike Road for a luncheon in August.
