GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- A Hawkins County woman has been shot in the face in what the Greene County sheriff calls a "freak accident."

The Greeneville Sun reports the shooting occurred around 10 a.m. Saturday at an estate auction taking place near the county line.

Sheriff Pat Hankins says the auction company was preparing to sell a .22-caliber rifle.

Hankins says a man in the crowd wanted to take a closer look at the gun and, as he took it, the weapon went off. A bullet from the gun struck a 63-year-old Surgoinsville woman in the face.

Hankins says the woman was transported to a hospital, where she was recovering.

Hankins says he wasn't sure if charges will be filed. He says the incident is still under investigation.
