A Baylor student died after an apparent cardiac event in the school's pool during a routine practice Monday afternoon, according to Barbara Kennedy, director of external affairs for Baylor School.

Sumner Smith, 16, was taken by ambulance to Erlanger after CPR had been performed on site. He was pronounced dead Monday evening at the hospital.

No further information is available at this time. The school asks that Smith's family be remembered in thoughts and prayers.

Baylor students gathered at Coolidge Park after school on Tuesday to remember Smith.

They wrote messages to him on balloons before making a circling and praying.

On the count of three, they released the balloons. Many stood teary-eyed watching as the wind carried them northwest. Others circled up to console each other and offer more prayers.

Students from Chattanooga Christian School, McCallie School, and Girls Preparatory School also attended.
