A Tennessee man charged with murder in connection with his 1-year-old son's death testified that he accidentally stepped on the child.

The Commercial Appeal reports that 33-year-old Curtis Morris of Germantown testified in court Wednesday that he was at home with his son and daughter in November 2009 when the incident occurred.

Morris said he jumped over a baby gate to attend to the child after he heard a thud. When defense attorney Arthur Horne asked what happened after jumping over the gate, Morris said he stepped on his son who was behind the gate.

A warrant for Morris' arrest was issued. He was later released on bond.

The Shelby County Medical Examiner investigated the baby's death and found his injuries were caused by "violent blunt force trauma to the abdomen."
