The suspended East Ridge High School teacher Grant Blaylock's charge of assault was sent to the grand jury today by General Sessions Court Judge Gary Starnes.

Blaylock was arrested last month and originally charged with aggravated assault in an incident that occurred between him and his wife, but now he faces this lesser charge.

"The only witness presented by the court, or the state in this case, was [Blaylock's] wife, who said it was an accident," said Blaylock's attorney Bill Speek. "[Blaylock's] wife testified that he tossed a cellphone behind him and it hit her."

Speek expects the charges will be dismissed, since Blaylock's wife said she never wanted to press charges. Starnes also lifted the no contact order that was in place between the two, according to Speek.

"It's our anticipation that this is not a case that will lead to a conviction from a jury," Speek said.

Blaylock will remain on an unpaid suspension from the Hamilton County Department of Education until the case is resolved.
