A new court date has been set for next week in the cases against Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey, two former Vanderbilt University football players charged with rape.
The status hearing, typically set to update judges on the progress of pending cases, is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 11 before Nashville Criminal Court Judge Monte Watkins.
Defense attorneys have previously said they will consider filling motions to change the second trial's location or bring in a jury from outside Davidson County. They say the intense media coverage of the trial in January risks they will be unable to get an impartial jury in Nashville. That as well as scheduling matters are possible topics of discussion at the hearing Sept. 11.
Vandenburg, 22, and Batey, 21, were found guilty after a trial in January of raping an unconscious female student in Vandenburg's dorm. But Watkins declared a mistrial because of an issue related to a juror's bias; the juror did not reveal during selection that he was a victim in an unrelated statutory rape case.
A second trial date on the same charges is scheduled for Nov. 30.
