An argument between a father and son Sunday resulted in a gunshot wound for the younger man.

Chattanooga police said the fight happened at a house at 1132 Birmingham Highway. Investigators were told the son, Robert Cody Martin, 22, grabbed a pistol from his bedroom and came into the living room threatening to kill his 55-year-old father.

The father, Bobby Martin, also grabbed a pistol. Thinking his son was about to point the pistol at him, he fired first, striking his son in the foot.

Robert Martin received treatment at a local hospital and was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on a charge of domestic aggravated assault, a police news release stated.

A neighbor who asked that her name not be used said she was awakened sometime around 11 a.m. by loud shouting outside her home.

She said she recognized the Martin father and son fighting on the front lawn and said the father was holding a black handgun.

"They were playing tug of war over a black bag," she said. "Then they ran back in the house."
