A dilapidated, historic barn has been the target of two suspected arson attempts this week according to authorities who investigated both incidents.

The first fire in the structure in the 2800 block of Harrison Pike started on the morning of April 1, 2016, according to Bruce Garner, spokesman for the Chattanooga Fire Department.

He said "the fire caused substantial damage to the structure before the firefighters could get the blaze under control."

The second fire began around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night and firefighters were able to put it out quickly. No injuries were reported in either fire.

The barn is located on city property at the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway.

Captain Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division said both fires appear to have been set intentionally and anyone with information is urged to call the Fire Investigation Division at (423) 643-5600.
