Officials: Inmate fatally struck while working on highway

TROY, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say an Alabama Department of Corrections inmate has died after being hit by a vehicle while working along a roadside near Troy.

Media outlets report state troopers say 34-year-old Steven Edward Martin of Warrior was killed Monday afternoon when he was struck by a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 231 in Pike County, around five miles south of Troy.

Pike County Coroner Jerry Williams says Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not hurt.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials say Martin was working on the side of the road as part of a cleanup crew.

Corrections officials say Martin was serving a one-year sentence out of Jefferson County for receiving stolen property. His sentence was set to be completed in October.
