State rests its case against Marion County father charged in death of baby son

JASPER, Tenn. - The state rested its case just before 10 a.m. CDT today in the Marion County, Tenn., trial against a father charged in the battering death of his 3-month-old son.

The state's last witness in the trial on Christopher E. Russell today was the medical examiner in Nashville who performed the autopsy on the body of infant Colin Eugene Russell after he died June 24, 2012.

Russell is on trial for charges of felony murder and aggravated child abuse.

The baby had stopped breathing June 17, 2012, before and medical officials spotted what they believed were suspicious injuries when he was delivered to first to the hospital in Jasper, then Vanderbilt in Nashville.

Medical Examiner Dr. Bridget Eutenier testified about the baby's examination in autopsy under direct questioning by Assistant District Attorney Steve Strain.

Eutenier testified that Colin had widespread brain injuries, old and new rib fractures and a spinal injuries. Eutenier said Colin's injuries were consistent with "acceleration and deceleration" movements, like being shaken.

Defense will begin calling witnesses at 10:10 a.m. CDT. Testimony in the trial could conclude today, Criminal Court Judge Thomas Graham said today at the beginning of court action.
