UPDATE Dec. 14 at 9:41 p.m.: The lane will remain closed through the night as the pothole repair did not pass additional strength testing.
Results of the 9 p.m. test were better than the 3 p.m. test, according to a release from TDOT, and engineers believe the pothole repair will pass the 6 a.m. test and hope the lane will be reopened before rush hour.

UPDATE Dec. 14 5:30 p.m.: The outside lane of U.S. 27 northbound on the bridge over 12th Street and the exit to M.L. King Boulevard remain closed due to a large pothole.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation hopes to have the lane open by rush hour tomorrow morning, according to a press release from TDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn.
A test on the concrete was not encouraging, according to the release. TDOT will conduct another sample tonight at approximately 9 p.m. If that test fails, TDOT will take another sample at 6 a.m. tomorrow.

Original story Dec. 13 7:50 p.m.: The outside lane of U.S. 27 northbound on the bridge over 12th Street and the exit ramp to M.L. King Boulevard are closed to repair a large pothole, a news release states.
It is "very likely" that the lane and exit ramp will be closed until sometime Wednesday night, according to the release from Jennifer Flynn with the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
Drivers who normally use the King Boulevard ramp will need to use the 4th St. exit ramp, the release states.
