A mother and baby escaped an apartment fire at 4969 Brighton Lane in Hixson this afternoon, according to a release from the Chattanooga Fire Department.

The mother was taken to Erlanger for treatment of smoke inhalation, according to the release, and is expected to survive. The baby was taken to the hospital with the mother, but fire department Public Information Director Bruce Garner said he believes the mother was the only one showing symptoms and the baby was just taken to stay with the mother.

The fire was contained to the upstairs area of one unit, according to the release. There is no estimate of dollar loss at this time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
