Marion County authorities launch investigation after corpse found in Tennessee River

A body that was found in the Tennessee River in Marion County has prompted an investigation by authorities.

Marion County Chief Deputy Billy Powell said the body was found at approximately 2 p.m. by two fishermen from Grundy County who spotted the man washed up against the bank near the bridge at Interstate-24.

Officers were dispatched to the scene and pulled the body from the water before sending it to Nashville for an autopsy.

The man could not be identified, partially because he could have been in the water for some time making it hard to identify race, said Powell. However, he was described as weighing approximately 160 to 170 pounds.

Powell encouraged anyone with information about the individual to contact authorities.

"Anybody with anyone missing or any issues that could be related to this, just call the Sheriff's department," he said.
