The McCallie School tops a list of the best private schools in Tennessee put together by Niche, a startup that was founded in 2002 by Carnegie Mellon students that provides reviews and expert opinion on education.

McCallie got high marks for its composite SAT/ACT score, the rankings of colleges that students go on to attend, the percentage of seniors who attend college, a parent/student survey, its diversity and culture grade, and its student-teacher ratio.

Much of the data is self-reported, but the school's 9:1 student-teacher ratio comes from the National Center for Education statistics, according to the site.

A number of Nashville and Memphis schools also made the list, as did The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, which was ranked ninth. The Baylor School, which is also located in Chattanooga and has a fierce rivalry with McCallie was ranked tenth.

Girls Preparatory School, sister school to McCallie, was ranked 12.

McCallie boasts a number of notable alumni, including media mogul Ted Turner, Howard Baker, Bill Brock, Andrew Exum, Pat Robertson, Zach Wamp, Olan Mills II and Jon Meacham.
