An autopsy is set for Monday morning in the death of a 24-year-old Monteagle woman who was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of her apartment complex Sunday morning.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jennifer Layne, stepdaughter of former Grundy County Sheriff Brent Myers, said 12th Judicial District Attorney Mike Taylor.

Authorities were called around 5 a.m. to the Monteagle Green Apartments on Madison Avenue in Monteagle, where they found Layne's body.

A male friend of Layne's who was driving the vehicle was there and spoke to investigators, Taylor said.

"It appears from everything they've told me it was a traffic accident, but it was not a hit and run. The young man involved stayed at the scene," he said.

The district attorney said Police Chief Virgil McNeese contacted him and asked to bring in the TBI.

"He wasn't quite sure at the inception what they had — whether it was a tragic accident or more than that," he said. "The chief wanted extra eyes so they could dot all the I's and cross all the T's."

The TBI agent will continue doing interviews and talking with the family, and the autopsy results also will help determine what happened, Taylor said.
