PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. - Alabama police say a 5-year-old girl was sexually assaulted while her mother worked as a prostitute in the next room.
Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said Tuesday that relatives contacted police after the girl reported being touched inappropriately.
Court records show the mother was with one man when she heard her daughter crying Dec. 8. Records show she went to check on the girl and found Orlando Howard on his knees. The girl said Howard sodomized her and tried making her perform oral sex.
Howard is in the Jefferson County jail. Attorney Thomas Thrash says he denies the allegations.
The mother also faces charges and is free on bond. The Associated Press doesn't generally identify sexual assault victims and isn't naming the mother to avoid identifying the daughter.
