(Knox County Schools via AP)The Knoxville News Sentinel reports details of the shooting that killed 15-year-old Zaevion Dobson were revealed at a court hearing Friday.
Twenty-year-old Christopher Bassett was arrested shortly after the Dec. 17 shooting on a weapons charge. He was already on probation in a separate case, and the Friday hearing was over whether to revoke that probation.
At the hearing, Knoxville Police investigator A.J. Loeffler said Bassett and two others went to the housing development where Dobson and friends were gathered on the night of Dec. 17 and shot into a group of teenagers.
Police found 23 .40-caliber shell casings and nine 9-mm shell casings on the street 20 to 30 yards from Dobson's body, Loeffler said.
With Bassett that night was Brandon Perry, whose mother had been shot earlier the same night. Police have said Bassett and Perry mistakenly targeted Dobson and his friends in retaliation. Perry was killed hours later in a separate shooting. Police are still searching for a third suspect.
After the hearing, the judge revoked Bassett's probation. He is being held without bond.
Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch said Wednesday that authorities are seeking a homicide indictment against Bassett.
Dobson's mother, Zenobia Dobson, was in court Friday and cried quietly after hearing details surrounding her son's death.
President Barack Obama praised Dobson's heroism in remarks on gun violence earlier this month.
In Knox County, officials declared Jan. 24 "Zaevion Dobson Day." Dobson wore football jersey number 24.
