CHI Memorial hospital officials are warning the public to be on the alert for a scam involving telephone calls soliciting money for the MaryEllen Locher cancer center.

Neither the hospital nor the cancer center make solicitation calls, hospital officials said.

Several area residents have received calls where the person on the telephone says he or she is asking for donations for the cancer center to aid women who cannot afford mammograms, hospital officials reported.

The callers claim to be representing the Breast Cancer Survivors Foundation, the Women's Relief Fund for Breast Cancer, or the Women's Breast Cancer Relief Association, hospital officials said.

"Many people throughout the Tennessee Valley have a personal connection with the Mary Ellen Locher Breast Center. We don't want anyone who knows about the great work done here to be misled by these organizations claiming to raise funds for us," said Jennifer Nicely, president of the CHI Memorial Foundation.

Anyone receiving a solicitation phone call for the cancer center should contact the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia at423-266-6144.

If you do wish to donate money to the cancer center, contact the CHI Memorial Foundation office for details, hospital officials said.
