A man was arrested in Highland Park today after police found he had marijuana in his possession, a loaded assault rifle in his car and a Tech 9 handgun in a nearby backpack.

Police responded to the 1600 block of East 12th Street on a call about a suspicious person and were met by a crowd of people in the street.

Police were able to find the man described, Marcus Brooks, 22, and noticed he smelled strongly of marijuana, which he admitted to having in his pant pockets.

Brooks was standing next to a Dodge Durango which he said he drove to the location. A K9 unit was called to the location and when the dog alerted on the vehicle, officers found a loaded SKS assault rifle inside.

The K9 unit then searched the area nearby and found a backpack with a loaded Tech 9 inside.

Brooks was taken into custody and charged with possession of marijuana for resale and unlawful possession of a weapon.
