A woman was shot and critically injured inside a home on Lewis Street today at about 1 p.m., according to police.

A man inside the home at 1206 Lewis Street negligently fired his weapon while he was handling it and wounded the woman, Police Chief Fred Fletcher said.

The shooter, who has not been publicly identified, was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car. He has not yet been criminally charged.

"We are doing a complete investigation, and if somebody behaved in a way that was criminal we will work with the district attorney to make sure that the community has the opportunity to hold people accountable to any criminal charges," Fletcher said.

The woman's name and age have not been released.

The shooter and the woman are not related, but police believe say they likely had some sort of relationship. Investigators are still working to figure out how well the two knew each other.

The woman does not live in the home.
