MEMPHIS - Police in Memphis say an 11-year-old girl severely injured in a shooting at an apartment was apparently shot accidentally by another child.

Memphis police spokeswoman Sgt. Karen Rudolph said investigators believe another 11-year-old child was playing with a gun when it went off, striking the girl.

The Commercial Appeal reported officers responded to a shooting call Friday just before noon near Winchester Road. The girl was taken to LeBonheur Children's Hospital, where she was in critical condition. No information was released about her condition on Saturday.

Herman Maxwell, who also lives at the Somerset Park apartments where the shooting happened, said he is hoping to move from the area because he is "sick of these gunshots."
