What: Georgia primary election
When: Polls are open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
Today marks primary election day in Georgia.
Voters in Walker County will decide for or against authorizing bonds to enable replacing Chickamauga's historic Gordon Lee High School and a seat in the state Senate as Lanny Thomas challenges incumbent state Sen. Jeff Mullis, R-Chickamauga.
Walker County voters also will select the Republican candidate for the county's sole commissioner seat. Fifteen-year incumbent Bebe Heiskell is running as an independent after winning the previous four elections as a Republican. Today's primary will determine which of two Republican challengers she will face: Mike Peardon or Shannon Whitfield.
Catoosa County has four contested races, including the offices of board of commissioners chairman, sheriff, tax commissioner and state representative for District 3.
More than a thousand people cast early ballots in the Catoosa County primary.
Other contested races include the seat for U.S. representative for District 14, in which Republicans Allan Levene and Mickey Tuck challenge incumbent Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ranger, and state Senate District 54, with Republican Conda Lowery-Goodson challenging incumbent Sen. Charlie Bethel, R-Dalton.
