Wildfires ravage Southeast

Fire crews are hoping to reach 100 percent containment on three wildfires in northwest Hamilton County today.

A spokeswoman from the Florida Forest Service briefed media on the firefighting efforts Tuesday morning in Soddy Daisy.

Fires continue to burn on Poe Road, on Flipper Bend and on Mowbray Mountain, but officials said Monday was successful in containing the flames that, at times, have threatened homes.

No homes are currently threatened by the three fires, according to officials.

Officials encouraged their crews to remain vigilant during a morning briefing attended by local officials.

Hamilton County major Jim Coppinger and interim school superintendent Kirk Kelly came to the briefing and thanked fire crews for their work.
