Authorities say two Cleveland, Tenn., residents have been jailed on charges involving drugs and a weapon at Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino in Cherokee County, N.C.

Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer said in a statement that during a joint investigation with Cherokee Tribal Police Department landed Matthew Crackle, 32, and Alison Hope Simpson, 23, both of Cleveland, behind bars on charges related to the discovery Oct. 7 of suspected controlled substances, including marijuana, and a weapon.

A tribal officer asked for assistance at the casino Friday afternoon, Palmer said.

During the investigation a large quantity of controlled substances and a handgun were found in the vehicle Crackle and Simpson were using. Both were detained and taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center.

Crackle was charged with trafficking in opium or heroin, carrying a concealed weapon, possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver a schedule IV controlled substance.

Simpson was charged with simple possession of a schedule II controlled substance, simple possession of a schedule V controlled substance and simple possession of a schedule VI controlled substance.

Crackle was released on a $60,000 secure bond and Simpson was released on a $500 secured bond. Both face dates in Cherokee County District Court on Oct. 25.

"This was a great team effort in getting a large quantity of drugs off the street. We are always glad to assist our Tribal neighbors," Palmer said. "Again, we see the disregard these folks have in mixing drugs and guns a very dangerous combination."

Palmer asked that anyone who has information on this crime or any other to report it. To report crime in Cherokee County, call the anonymous tip line at 828-837-1344 or email a tip at crime.tips@cherokeecounty-nc.gov or call 911 if a crime observed in progress.
