Walker County Commissioner Shannon Whitfield has closed the local transit system for Friday "out of extreme caution."

The bus system will still run for dialysis and medical patients, he said in a news release tonight. A winter storm warning is in place for Walker County, as well as surrounding counties in northwest Georgia, according to WRCB-TV meteorologist Paul Barys.

He said the region could see about 1-1/2 inches of snow, with cold air and moisture seeping into the atmosphere beginning tonight and remaining through the weekend.

"Our transit staff will be in contact with our dialysis and medical patients to accommodate their transportation needs for Friday," Whitfield said in his news release.
