Body found Tuesday in Etowah identified as missing teen

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has identified the body found in Etowah, Tenn., Tuesday afternoon as that of an 18-year-old reported missing on Saturday.

The body has been identified through preliminary autopsy results as Kelsey N. Burnette, who had been reported missing to the Etowah Police Department, triggering a request from 10th Judicial District Attorney General Steven Crump for help from the TBI, according to a statement from spokeswoman Susan Niland.

Burnette's body was found Tuesday off of Charles Street by a local resident, officials said.

Niland did not say whether foul play is suspected but noted that investigators are "awaiting further results from the Medical Examiner's Office that will provide additional information."

The investigation remains active and ongoing, Niland said.

Charles Street is a short, two-block-long, one-lane paved road that links Pennsylvania and Georgia avenues, crossing Athens Pike midway.
