A 29-year-old man is being held on a $1 million bond after police say he beat a woman to death Sunday night.
Police say Michael Hicks hit Sherie Hinds with his fists, a piece of furniture, and a "smaller solid object" after he saw Hinds attacking his ex-girlfriend inside a living room on the 3900 block of Caine Lane.
Police found Hicks later that night at 1813 Citico Ave. with small bruises on his knuckles. He has a court date on July 18before Hamilton County General Sessions Court judge Gary Starnes.
Police went to the apartment around 9 p.m. and found Hinds on her back and unresponsive, her marks and bruises consistent with blunt force trauma to the head and face.
Police spoke with Shalonda Percy, who told them she and Hinds were fighting, and that Hinds was on top of her when Hicks came into the apartment and started hitting her in the face.
A second witness who fled after the fight, Jeremiah McClendon, said he saw Hicks hit Hinds several times in the face until she fell down. Then he started using the furniture to attack her.
Hicks, who has two other pending charges for possession of marijuana and assault, asked for a lawyer during his questioning. Police charged him with criminal homicide based on the evidence gathered so far in the case, court records show.
