ORIGINAL STORY: The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Chattooga County this afternoon.

The sheriff's office and Summerville police were in a residential area on 7th Street around 12:20 p.m., investigating a robbery from Monday. The suspect in the case "struck" an officer and ran away, Chattooga County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Kevin Woods said.

According to a release from Sheriff Mark Schrader, the suspect hopped out the window of a home, leading to a chase.

The officers on scene then spotted the suspect soon after. Schrader said that an investigator "was ale to make contact" with the suspect, and they wrestled on the ground.

"Preliminary information suggests that, while struggling on the ground[,] the suspect grabbed the investigators [sic] weapon," Schrader wrote in his release.

The investigator then fired a shot, hitting the suspect in the stomach. Paramedics airlifted the suspect to Erlanger Health System, Woods said. He did not know the person's condition.

The patrol unit of the sheriff's office wears body cameras, but Woods is not sure whether anybody on scene had such a device.

The sheriff's office was involved in a police shooting in March 2014. Members of the U.S. Marshal's Office were also involved in the shooting of a suspect near the Chattooga County-Walker County line on March 28.
