The Chattanooga Times Free Press received the Tennessee Press Association's top award for its size paper in the 2017 journalism awards.

The newspaper on Thursday received the General Excellence award in the large newspaper category at TPA's annual meeting in Franklin, Tenn. The award is given to the newspaper with the highest number of points, based on awards won.

This is the fourth year in a row the Times Free Press has won the General Excellence sweepstakes award. The paper received 10 first-place awards.

The Times Free Press received the following awards:

First place for best news photograph, education coverage, sports coverage, single feature, breaking news coverage, personal humor column, investigative reporting, graphics and illustrations, single editorial and Sunday editions.

Second-place for business coverage, personal column, make-up and appearance, community lifestyles, headline writing, sports writing, feature photograph, public service, personal humor column and news reporting.

Third-place for local features, editorials and best news reporting. The paper also won some fourth- and fifth-place awards.

The Times Free Press earlier this year received the Green Eyeshade Award, the top award in a contest among 11 Southeastern states, for "The Poverty Puzzle" series. That series was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
