(John Roark/Athens Banner-Herald via AP) JC's Family BBQ failed its health inspection this week after an inspector found molded food and other problems. And at Central High School, which was eight points away from a failing grade, the health inspector found an active termite infestation.
The termite infestation in the library at Central High, located at 5728 Highway 58, along with ceiling vents in poor repair, an electrical box unlocked with exposed wires, the men's locker room restroom has mildew dropped the school's health score to 77.
JC's Family BBQ, which is located at 9070 Highway 58, was the only restaurant to fail this week's inspections and the only restaurant to score below an 82 - anything below a 70 is a failing grade - with a 62.
The reasons listed for the restaurant's failure include molded food found in a non-working freezer, employees not wearing gloves when handling ready-to-eat food, hood excessively dirty, not enough ventilation in the kitchen, various equipment covered in food debris, lights in food prep areas covered in dust/food debris and improper cooling methods used.
Portobello's, also on Highway 58, received the second lowest restaurant score with an 82. The restaurant was cited for ceiling/vent tiles in poor repair, wet/soiled rag sitting out on prep table, manager not demonstrating enough food safety knowledge and mildew buildup in the the ice machine. Portobello's score was corrected to a 97.
Southern Restaurant on Hixson Pike scored an 83 for thawing fish in standing water, a container labeled 'chili' dated 2-6-17 contained potato salad, storage shelves dirty, seals in poor repair and a bag of onions stored on the floor. The score was later corrected to a 92.
