Alabama father charged after son shot in head during dispute

A DeKalb County, Ala., father is behind bars and his son is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head after a dispute Tuesday.

The father, 53-year-old Scott K. Slaton, of Henagar, was arrested on the scene and charged with obstructing government operations and resisting arrest, according to a statement issued by Sheriff Jimmy Harris.

Deputies got the call around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on a domestic dispute between father and son with shots fired at a residence on County Road 739 in Henagar, Harris said.

When investigators, deputies, Ider police and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency state troopers got to the scene, they found a 24-year-old man that appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head, Harris said. The man, identified now as Slaton's son, was taken by DeKalb Ambulance Service to a local hospital in Chattanooga where he underwent surgery.

The son has not been identified by name nor have officials said how he was shot. His condition is unknown.

Jacksonville State Forensics Science Investigator Mark Hopwood helped process the scene, Harris said.

"This is an unfortunate incident that occurred and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family," Harris said. "This is still an ongoing investigation and as we continue to compile information and evidence, it will be possible that more charges will be added. If not, we will send this case to grand jury for further review."
