Two people were injured in separate shootings in Chattanooga early Tuesday morning.

The first incident took place at around 1:15 a.m. when police were called to a home in the 100 block of Signal Hills Drive.

Police found a man lying in the road with a gunshot wound to the leg, a news release said. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injury that was not considered life-threatening.

The victim told police he was shot during an attempted robbery.

Then, all the way on the other side of the city at around 7:27 a.m., police were called to the 4300 block of 14th Avenue.

There, a man had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg that was not considered life-threatening. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The man told police he heard several gunshots before realizing he had been shot, according to a second news release.

No additional information was available for the two shootings, as they're still under investigation.

Tuesday's two shootings mark the city's 89th and 90th non-fatal shootings of 2018, according to Times Free Press records. By this time last year, the city had seen 111 shootings.

Homicides remain down by about 41 percent this year, according to records. Last year, there were 34 homicides in Chattanooga. Two of those were stabbings, one was a hot car death and another was death by blunt-force trauma.

This year there have been 20 homicides, with 19 of those carried out with a firearm. The latest, which took place on Sunday, was a stabbing.

Tavonia Johnson, 49, was charged with criminal homicide after police say she stabbed her husband to death. She told police he was attacking her, but police and medical personnel didn't find her to have any signs of injury.
