The public is invited to learn more about a proposal to levy deposits on bottles and cans to encourage recycling, reduce litter and raise money for good causes.

The "TennCan" bill will be introduced in the 2019 Tennessee General Assembly. The plan calls for a 5-cent deposit on beverage containers that would be redeemable at collection center.

Backers say bottles and cans comprise about half of Tennessee's litter volume. The refundable fee would help reduce the number of discarded beverage containers and would raise money for litter grants, schools, nonprofits and more. Larn more at https://tnbottlebill.org/.

The event is set for 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Ivy Academy, a charter school with an environmental focus. The address is 8520 Dayton Pike in Soddy-Daisy.
