Class Notes: Registration for kindergarten, pre-K in Hamilton County now open

Registration for kindergarten, pre-K in Hamilton County now open

Registration for new kindergarten students for Hamilton County Schools for the 2019-20 school year begins Monday, April 1. Registration for pre-K in Hamilton County also begins next week. Applications will be accepted at local schools that offer pre-K classes on April 3.

Once parents have registered online, schools will contact parents to set-up a day and time to bring necessary documentation to the school to complete the registration.

This documentation includes: a certified copy of the child's birth certificate, a Tennessee School Immunization Certificate, a photo ID of the parent or legal custodian of the child and/or proof of court-ordered custody of a child living with a divorced parent, custodian or guardian as well as two separate proofs of residency.

A child must be five years old on or before Aug. 15, 2019. to attend kindergarten this fall.

Those who do not have internet access can visit the district's central office between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday to register. Registration will take place in the Board Room at 3074 Hickory Valley Road.

Cleveland High School senior selected to attend National Youth Science Camp

Lauren Proctor, a senior at Cleveland High School, has been selected as one of two Tennessee student-delegates to attend the National Youth Science Camp after graduation this summer.

The camp is a residential science education program for young scientists that provides opportunities to explore explore new areas in the biological and physical sciences, art, and music as well as visit sites such as NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Sciences, and Teaching and Learning national museums.

Proctor was selected based on her extensive science education in high school and research experience.

"Lauren has excelled in science classes and science organizations at Cleveland High School. We are so proud she has been selected to attend the National Youth Science Camp," said Jeanie Long, a Cleveland High science teacher, in a statement. "We are excited she will have the opportunity to hear from researches in STEM fields and meet with lawmakers in Washington, D.C."

Hamilton County Schools recognized for music education

Hamilton County Schools is among 10 Tennessee school districts to be honored by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in 2019.

In its 20th year, the program honors schools and school districts for the outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of the core curriculum.

This year, Superintendent Bryan Johnson pushed to add related arts teachers in schools throughout the district and the Opportunity Zone recently held its second annual arts showcase.

The other Tennessee districts recognized include Bartlett City Schools, Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, Germantown Municipal School District, Gibson County Special School District, Kingsport City Schools, Lakeland School System, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Rutherford County Schools and Shelby County Schools.

Tyner Academy's Future Ready students visit EPB

Students from the Tyner Academy EPB Institute of Technology and Networking visited and learned from EPB employees during a visit to the company on March 27.

During the visit, EPB employees shared with students interested in technology and networking how technology is a part of their daily life at work. Students also participated in a hands-on demonstration to dismantle and reassemble a computer and attended a "lunch and learn" event with employees.

"EPB has partnered with the Future Ready Institute at Tyner, and this is the first hands-on opportunity we have conducted here at EPB, said Todd Edwards, IT support manager for EPB, in a statement. "We are working with students to take apart the computers and put them back together."

Tyner's Future Ready Institute is one of 27 in Hamilton County career-themed small learning communities embedded in the district's traditional high schools.
