A Chattanooga man died in a water accident over the Thanksgiving holiday in Alabama.

Michael Picou, 49, was in the water on Nov. 27 in Orange Beach, Alabama, while on a trip with his family when he ran into trouble, according to a GoFundMe set up by a family friend. The nature of the incident was not clear.

Picou's wife, Kacey Picou, is an executive assistant for Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond.

In a statement Tuesday, Hammond mourned the loss.

"Having lost my father to a drowning incident as a very small child, my heart breaks for Kacey and the loss she is feeling at this challenging and sad time," he said. "I have reassured her she has our full support and our prayers during this difficult time and I ask our community to please keep her in your prayers as she grieves the loss of her beloved husband."

Arrangements will be announced at a later time.
