A magnitude 2.5 earthquake shook a remote area of McMinn County, Tennessee, at 9:28 a.m. Thursday about halfway between Etowah and Tellico Plains near the Monroe County line, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake occurred at the earth's surface, the USGS reported.

Officials initially centered the temblor in a remote mountainous wooded area about a mile east of Liberty Hill Road. There are no homes in the immediate area and there was no report of damage.

Quakes between magnitude 2.0 and 3.0 usually are felt only by a few people at rest, especially on upper floors of buildings, according to the USGS.
