Services have been announced for a disabled Chattanooga veteran who died from injuries he suffered in a backyard explosion on Nov. 26.

Mark Allen Kerley, 57, was severely burned while doing yard work in a neighbor's yard in the 3000 block of Wheeler Avenue, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Authorities said he was trying to burn a "very large stump" using a mixture of oil and gasoline when the container exploded.

The neighbor heard the loud boom from the explosion and rushed to Kerley's aid, pulling off his burning clothes in an effort to minimize his injuries. He then called 911.

Kerley was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center's burn unit in Nashville, where he died the next day.

A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

"He was loved by many, and will be dearly missed," his obituary states.

A fire department spokeswoman said at the time that Kerley was "well-known in his neighborhood for always being willing to help others in the community."

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time," the release states.
