A man was arrested Tuesday in DeKalb County, Alabama, on child porn charges after an 11-year-old boy who had been reported missing earlier in the day was found with him at a hotel.
Douglas Brooks Hamilton, 42, was booked Tuesday at the Boaz City Jail on a charge of production of child pornography, Boaz Assistant Police Chief Walter Colbert said in a statement on the department's Facebook page. Colbert said DeKalb County sheriff's deputies and Collinsville police assisted in the arrest. Hamilton also has been charged with kidnapping, first-degree, officials said.
Investigators and prosecutors believe the boy is not the subject of any alleged pornographic material, police Chief Josh Gaskin told the Sand Mountain Reporter newspaper in Albertville on Tuesday.
No information was released on the number or age of any alleged victims.
Authorities also have charged a 32-year-old woman believed to be the boy's mother, who is not identified here due to the nature of the crime, with production of pornography with minors and two counts of second-degree sexual abuse. The woman and Hamilton were charged on warrants stemming from an investigation launched in October.
Gaskin told the paper of the investigation that began Oct. 16 after a search of the Boaz home where the woman and Hamilton live.
Electronic equipment was seized from the home and the pair each were charged Oct. 22 with possession of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in connection with that operation, Gaskin told the Albertville paper. An analysis of the electronic equipment seized led to warrants for their arrests on the pornography-related charges, he said.
When investigators, armed with the warrants, went to the home on Tuesday to make arrests, Hamilton wasn't there and neither was the boy, Gaskin told the Alabama paper. That triggered the missing child alert and authorities eventually got a tip Hamilton and the boy were at the Travelers Inn in Collinsville off of Interstate 59.
Hamilton has since been transferred from the Boaz jail to the Marshall County Jail, where he is being held on a $60,000 bond on the production of child pornography charge and $150,000 bond on the kidnapping, first-degree, charge, according to police. Records show the woman charged is being held at the same facility on a $60,000 bond on the production of pornography charge, while no bond was listed for the two counts of sexual abuse.
No court date was listed for either defendant.
