Richard Calvin "Dick" Fowler Jr., the president of Fowler Brothers Furniture in Chattanooga for more than 35 years, died Tuesday.
The 79-year-old businessman, who lived on Lookout Mountain, worked in his family's furniture business for more than four decades. The business dates back to 1885 and the Fowler Brothers Co. is now headed by Fowler's son, Walter Carter Fowler.
Fowler Brothers Co. now operates under two brands — the Furniture Shoppe and The Patio Shop.
Fowler was a fourth-generation member of the Rotary Club of Chattanooga and a leader in the furniture industry, winning multiple industry awards.
He was raised on Lookout Mountain, attended Bright and McCallie schools, and was a graduate of Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire. Fowler also attended the University of Georgia, where he met his wife Sarah. While attending UGA, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
He returned to Chattanooga in 1963 to work in the family furniture business, which has operated showrooms in Chattanooga since 1910.
A Celebration of Life Service for Fowler will be held on Monday, Dec. 30, at noon at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joe Novenson, the Rev. Calvin Fowler and the Rev. Brian Salter officiating. A reception and visitation will be Monday from 10:30 am until noon at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, 316 N. Bragg Ave., Lookout Mountain, TN 37350. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Deacon Mercy Fund at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society.
