Times Free Press honored in Green Eyeshade journalism awards

The Times Free Press building is more than 90 years old. It was Davenport Hosiery Mills before it became a newspaper office. Visitors can stop in a small museum near the lobby that contains artifacts from more than 100 years of publishing.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press was recognized for its work in the Society of Professional Journalists' Green Eyeshade Awards.

The Times Free Press won five awards, including three first-place awards, in the contest among news organizations across 11 Southeastern states.

Times Free Press first-place awards were for:

* Editorial cartoons, for a collection of work by Clay Bennett.

* Serious commentary, for a collection of work for by David Cook.

* Best magazine cover for Chatter magazine.

The Times Free Press also received a second-place award for magazine graphics for work by Design Editor Matt McClane in Chatter magazine. Reporter Mark Pace received a third-place award for investigative reporting for his work on a Chattanooga police officer accused of rapes that were not investigated.

Since 1950, the Green Eyeshade Awards have honored the best journalism in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
