Whitfield County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Tracy Dale Davis tendered a letter of resignation this morning, a week after he was charged with abusing his son.

"I would like to take this time to thank you, sheriff and all command staff for all the opportunities that have been given to me," Davis wrote in an email at 10:10 a.m. "I would also like to apologize for any negativity that I have caused with all the allegations and charges that have come forth in the past two weeks. I have enjoyed working with you all and hope to remain friends after things have died down and my life is back to normal."

The Fort Oglethorpe Police Department announced on April 25 that Davis faced charges of aggravated assault and two counts of cruelty to children. According to a news release from the department, Davis became angry in the parking lot of the Goodwill on Battlefield Parkway when he was supposed to pick up his children from his ex-wife.

His 9-year-old son did not want to leave with him, according to the release. He then allegedly hit the boy in the head and upper body multiple times, choked him and threw him. The boy's mother and other witnesses gave this account to police.

The sheriff's office placed Davis on administrative leave after his arrest. According to the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council, he has worked as a law enforcement officer since 2005. The sheriff's office promoted him to sergeant in 2010.
