Law enforcement officers have arrested a man suspected in the bloody killing of a Resaca, Georgia, resident. Eric Stewart, 26, had been camping behind the victim's home following his release from jail the day before, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The GBI obtained warrants on Friday for the arrest of Stewart for murder and concealing the death of another, according to a Saturday news release from the bureau. Stewart was taken into custody at about 11:15 a.m. Friday, not far from the scene of the alleged killing.

The Murray County Sheriff's Office had requested that the GBI's Calhoun office assist in a murder investigation regarding the death of Donnie Charles on Friday morning, shortly after the Murray County 911 Center was contacted at 8:30 a.m. about Charles being found behind his residence in the 1000 block of Sexton Road.

During a search of the property near Charles' home, law enforcement officers discovered a campsite that contained bloody items belonging to both Charles and Stewart, the news release states. Witnesses said Stewart had been camping behind Charles' home. Stewart had been released from the Gordon County Jail on Thursday.

Charles' body was taken to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy Saturday. The results are pending, the news release states.

The investigation remains active.
