Chattanooga Councilwoman Demetrus Coonrod named to state Democratic Party committee

Chattanooga City Councilwoman Demetrus Coonrod has been named to the state executive committee for 10th Senate District for the Tennessee Democratic Party.

She will replace Khristy Wilikinson, who announced her resignation from the post to which she was elected in August 2018, according to a news release.

It was not immediately clear why or when Wilkinson resigned.

Coonrod will be responsible for promoting the ideas and principles of the Democratic Party and assist in the election of Democratic nominees, the release states.

In addition, state committee members are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the party at the state level, including establishing the procedure for selecting delegates to the Democratic National Convention, the release states.

In Hamilton County, Chris Anderson is the male representative on the committee for the 10th Senate District.

Coonrod has previously served as vice chairwoman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party.

In a news release, Coonrod said she is honored to serve the people of Senate District 10 and looks forward to working with Democrats across the state "to elect progressive leaders who believe in equality and justice for all."

The next election for state committee officers will be in August 2022.
