Two-year-old dies after being hit by truck in Murray County

Authorities are investigating after a 2-year-old was hit and killed by a truck in Murray County, Georgia.

The accident happened around 7:20 p.m. on Oct. 15 on Old Dalton Elijay Road at Diamond Way, a residential area of Chatsworth.

According to an incident report from the Murray County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash that involved a juvenile identified as 2-year-old Riley Harris.

Deputies found the driver of a black Dodge truck lying in the ditch holding his neck with his family near the vehicle.

Another man was driving a white Nissan truck and his hand was injured in the crash.

He told deputies that the 2-year-old was in the middle of the road when he was driving on Old Dalton Elijay Road.

Riley walked into the road with another 2-year-old and the driver tried to swerve out of the way, but hit the child and the other vehicle.

The 2-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The toddler's stepfather told deputies he was looking for two young children that got out of his home when deputies interviewed witnesses and families.

He told deputies he was playing video games when the 2-year-old sneaked out of a back door that does not lock properly.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia State Patrol are investigating the incident.

As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed in the case.
